10 Things You Can Do
10 THINGS YOU CAN DO FOR JUSTICE FOR OSCAR GRANT
& ALL VICTIMS OF POLICE ABUSE
1) Help Educate the Public about this Case. Hold a Teach-In, show the videos, tell people how they can get involved. Show the video of the murder at Youtube – Oscar Grant Clearest (and see Tributes on this page). Use a projector to show the murder, tributes, and other presentations to people in the community, indoors and out, on walls, streetcorners, etc.
2) HELP RAISE & DONATE FUNDS to support statewide organizing efforts. Buy a T-Shirt @ blkisacult.bigcartel.com. Donate online at onefam.org, and note Oscar Grant on your check or donation.
3) WE ARE ALL OSCAR GRANT – Organize Solidarity Events Where You Are During the TRIAL. Show solidarity and the similarities between what abuses by law enforcement in your area – by Police, Sheriffs, ICE, Corrections Officers, Campus or Transit cops, etc.. Law enforcement is out of control in California laws protect them all, and they at the door to the Prison Industrial Complex.
4) ORGANIZE STATEWIDE SOLIDARITY EVENTS IN RESPONSE TO THE VERDICT! The People of the State of California expect accountability from law enforcement. If former-officer Mehserle is acquitted, law enforcement will be given a green light to kill at will, backed by the court. NOT GUILTY IS NOT AN OPTION!
5) Express Yourself! Since Oscar’s murder, the People have created countless powerful, beautiful works of art in Tribute to Oscar and putting this case in a larger context. Where’s yours?
6) Come to the Trial. Show the People are watching this case and expect a fair trial al the way around. Ex-officer Mehserle is the defendant on trial for murder and has legal rights. Oscar and his friends also have rights as victims, and they are not the ones to be put on trial in this case.
7) Check the Mainstream Media: Write Letters to the Editor, Respond to Articles (some Responses are so racist they have been taken off-line). Help get the truth out by writing or sharing Articles about the case with media outlets in your area. Find more independent media see www.indybay.org/oscar grant.
8) Use your Social Networks. There will be numerous announcements, articles, and events to share in the coming weeks. Though we have limited access to the mainstream media, we have countless networking methods of our own. Use yours to spread the word!
9) Know the Law, Know Your Rights & Know Your Video Camera! Police abuse occurs daily, especially against people of color and low income communities, but other folks really don’t know or don’t believe it. Educate those who don’t know. Assert your rights, carefully. And use your technology to help document, distribute and demand justice in cases of misconduct.
10) Contact your Elected Officials about Legislation that puts the Rights of the Police above the Rights of the Public. The process of this case and outcome is intertwined with California’s “Police Bill of Rights,” by preventing the public from getting information about officers and prior conduct. This case is using this to protect ex-officer Mehserle. His past is kept out of the case while Oscar’s is allowed.
The final outcome will show whether or not law enforcement officers will be given free rein to abuse and kill citizens with no accountability – and whatever happens after that.
